How to Prepare for Storm Damage

The sun is shining now, which means that it is the perfect time to start preparing for when it isn’t. With cooler weather closer than you might think, you may want to start asking yourself if you’re as prepared as you can be for any storms that could roll through.

How to Prepare for Storm Damage

For more severe storms, one of the things you can do to be prepared is to reinforce your garage, your doors, and windows. Things like high-impact glass, storm shutters, and garage door bracing kits (or even opting for a stronger garage door built to withstand storms) can help to minimize storm damage that may have otherwise occurred. Additionally, if you are worried about flooding, attempt to move anything valuable or electronic higher up, either off the floor or, if you can, to the second floor of your home.

Storms, severe or otherwise, often come with strong winds. It is impossible to protect yourself fully against any possible flying objects, but there are a few steps you can take to minimize the storm damage you take from high winds. The first thing you can do is to keep on top of pruning your trees. If there are a lot of dead branches or hanging limbs, make sure they’re cut before a storm comes along and rips them away. Another thing you can do is to make sure your roof is in good order. Loose shingles are more likely to be blown away, leaving parts of your roof less protected and more susceptible to further storm damage.
